HF Hotels, Imperial House, Edgeware Road, London NW9 5AL. Mostly converted large houses throughout the British Isles. Originally for walkers they now accept anyone and they have no muzak anywhere. Excellent cuisine. Website
Wetherspoon Pubs. No music, family friendly and cheap this chain is a godsend in a muzak-polluted world.
All cafes in National Trust properties have a policy of not playing muzak.

The Star Inn, The Paragon, Bath. The 16th century pub on the Paragon is just one of only two pubs in the city to make the main listings on the 2004 Good Pub Guide. This old pub gives a strong sense of the past. With no machines or music, chat's the thing here or perhaps cribbage, dominoes and shove halfpenny.

It has a relaxed atmosphere with great open fires, friendly staff and good food. The menu is short on quantity but long on quality except for vegetarians. The large beer garden in the summer is always busy.
The Fisherman's Cottage, 224 Kennetside, Reading. Tel. 0118 9571553. The food may well be "out of this world" but it is not the only attractive thing about the Fisherman's Cottage. Sitting in the beer garden, overlooking the Kennet, you are transported from the hustle and bustle of town. Great food, cold beer and fresh air, what more do you want?

Definitely used by the wealthy set (mainly for its food which has an excellent reputation) but the beer is in good condition and the place has style.

The garden is great for families, and the Blue has been praised by visitors for its child-friendliness.

Quite simply, it was difficult to find any area where we could mark down the pub - the quality of the beer, the food, the service, the cleanliness and the proper, "pubby" atmosphere of a traditional English village pub at its best. The rear garden is enclosed and safe while inside there is no TV, no jukebox, no piped music, just the contented sound of happy folk eating, drinking and chatting. The landlord says: "I object to any noise in the pub other than people talking to each other”.

Housed in a very small building on the quiet back street known as Prospect Row, is the charming, wooden-floored pub known as The Free Press. Over 120 years old, this pub was once the home of a printing press, and its walls are decorated with old newspapers, as well as the rowing paraphernalia of various university rowing teams. In the winter, you can feel really cozy there, as a roaring fire is lit in the open hearth. But probably the real piece de resistance of the Free Press is its amazing lack of background noise - no piped music, no beeping games machines, and mobile phones are banned.
